The indie game Undertale, developed by Toby Fox, has set a new all-time concurrent player record on Steam, a decade after its original release.
A Decade-Old Classic Sees a New Surge in Players

Originally released in September 2015, Undertale quickly gained critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. The game is widely praised for its:
- Unique storytelling
- Innovative gameplay mechanics
- Outstanding soundtrack
Currently, Undertale is available in the Steam Spring Sale for a special discounted price of $0.99 / £0.69. This discount runs until March 20 (March 30 on the Persian calendar).
The significant price drop has encouraged a wave of new players to purchase and experience the game for the first time.
New Player Record on Steam
Toby Fox announced that Undertale had surpassed its previous concurrent player record from December 2015, when 10,473 players were playing at the same time.
On Saturday, Fox posted a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) showing that 10,739 players were simultaneously playing the game on Steam.
Shortly after, the record was broken again. According to SteamDB, on Sunday, the concurrent player count reached 11,071, setting a new all-time high.
Before this sudden resurgence, Undertale’s concurrent player count hadn’t surpassed 5,000 players since 2016. This new milestone indicates a fresh wave of players discovering the game.
Undertale’s Continued Popularity Across Platforms
In addition to Steam, Undertale is available on:
- Xbox One
- PlayStation 4
- Nintendo Switch
- PlayStation Vita
Depending on the platform, the game holds an impressive Metacritic score of 92-93.
Undertale’s Influence and Legacy
Undertale was heavily inspired by:
- Nintendo’s Mother series
- Nihon Falcom’s Brandish franchise
Its popularity in Japan is so strong that Sans, one of the game’s most iconic characters, was added as a DLC costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
What’s Next for Toby Fox?
Following Undertale’s massive success, Toby Fox has been working on its spiritual successor, Deltarune.
- He is currently developing Chapters 3 and 4 of Deltarune, which are set to be released in the future.
