The PC version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered has finally been released on Steam, offering players an upgraded experience with improved visuals and full DualSense controller support. But one big question remains—how well did it perform at launch?
Launch Weekend Player Numbers Fall Short of Expectations
According to reports, the game reached a peak of 30,690 concurrent players during its first weekend on Steam (April 3, 2025). While this is a strong debut, it still falls short compared to The Last of Us Part I Remake, which hit a peak of 36,500 concurrent players at launch.
Some industry analysts have noted that this performance might be below Sony’s expectations for one of their most acclaimed titles—especially after the hype built around the remastered version.
Graphical Upgrades and New Features for PC Gamers
Despite the slightly lower numbers, the PC release brings several new features and enhancements to the game. These include advanced graphics settings, support for ultra-wide monitors, custom frame rate options, and seamless compatibility with PlayStation’s DualSense features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
For PC gamers, this means a much more immersive and customizable experience—especially for those with high-end hardware.
New Content Added to No Return Mode
Alongside the PC launch, fresh content was released for the No Return mode. This includes four new maps:
- Overlook
- School
- Streets
- Nest
Additionally, two new playable characters—Bill and Marlene—have been introduced, each with unique weapons and abilities, offering new strategies and gameplay possibilities.
These updates were also made available for PlayStation 5 users via a free patch.
Technical Issues and Bugs at Launch
However, the PC launch hasn’t been without problems. Several players reported performance issues, particularly optimization bugs. In some cases, characters like Ellie and Abby lost their skills due to a bug in the save system.
Many players are hopeful that these bugs will be addressed in upcoming patches and updates.
Low Ranking Among Sony’s PC Titles
Despite its critical acclaim, The Last of Us Part II Remastered has not climbed high on the chart of Sony’s most popular PC releases. It ranks below other major titles such as God of War: Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima, which performed more strongly in terms of concurrent player counts and overall popularity at launch.
Still Worth Playing for New and Returning Fans
If you’re a fan of intense, emotional storytelling and survival gameplay, this PC version still offers a memorable experience. With stunning visuals, solid performance on most systems, and additional content, it’s a great way to explore the emotional journey of Ellie and Abby—whether you’re playing for the first time or revisiting the story in higher fidelity.
