The developers behind Ghost of Yotei have officially confirmed that the game will not include the Stance system, a popular combat mechanic featured in Ghost of Tsushima that allowed players to adapt to different enemy types by switching combat styles.

A New Direction in Combat Design

According to Nate Fox, the game’s creative director, the team at Sucker Punch has decided to move away from Stances and instead introduce a diverse arsenal of weapons, each with its own unique purpose. Speaking to GamesRadar, Fox explained that the new combat system introduces “more layers that create the feeling of improvisational fighting.”

He emphasized that these weapons are not just cosmetic swaps—each weapon significantly alters the way players approach combat scenarios.

    Examples of New Weapon Functions:

    • Spear – Used to push enemies back and control distance.

    • Kusarigama – Effective for taking on groups of enemies at once.

Additionally, a disarm mechanic plays a vital role in the game’s combat flow. If players lose their weapon during a fight, they’ll need to steal an enemy’s weapon to continue battling—adding an element of unpredictability and urgency.

Firearms Make an Appearance—But With Limitations

The game will also include firearms, but they are described as situational tools rather than primary weapons. While they can be deadly when timed correctly, they lack the versatility of melee weapons and aren’t meant for constant use.

The Wolf Companion: More Than Just a Pet

New details have emerged about the wolf companion that accompanies the main character. Representing the wildlife of Ezo, the wolf is more than a combat partner. It plays a role in both combat and exploration, but unlike a typical video game pet, it has its own independent behavior.

The wolf won’t always be present during missions but will remain close to the player in the game world, acting as a living symbol of nature’s connection to the protagonist.
