CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, now known as Cyberpunk 2, has entered the pre-production stage. The announcement was made during the company’s Q1 2025 financial report, signaling a major step forward for one of the most anticipated follow-ups in modern gaming.

Previously referred to as Project Orion, Cyberpunk 2 is now in development under CD Projekt’s North American division, which includes new studios based in Boston and Vancouver. This marks the studio’s first major project developed primarily outside of Poland, indicating a significant shift in strategy and ambition.

From Concept to Creation: What We Know About Cyberpunk 2

According to CD Projekt, the concept phase of Cyberpunk 2 wrapped up just a few weeks ago. With that milestone completed, the development team is now focused on building the foundations of the full game. While details about gameplay mechanics or storylines remain under wraps, the move into pre-production suggests that concrete design work has begun.

The studio emphasized that the next installment will build on lessons learned from the first game—both its successes and missteps—aiming to deliver a more refined and immersive experience.

Phantom Liberty Breaks Records with Over 10 Million Units Sold

In addition to the Cyberpunk 2 update, CD Projekt proudly announced that the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 10 million copies sold. This impressive number shows that interest in the Cyberpunk universe remains high, even years after the game’s rocky launch.

The expansion was widely praised for its storytelling, characters, and polished gameplay—restoring much of the player trust that had been lost and setting a strong foundation for future titles.

Mike Pondsmith Teases New City and Dystopian Atmosphere

In a recent interview, Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the original Cyberpunk tabletop universe, shared some exciting insights. He revealed that Cyberpunk 2 will introduce a new city, which he described as having the atmosphere of a broken, futuristic Chicago.

Although Pondsmith noted that he is less directly involved in the development process this time around, he remains closely connected to the project. He confirmed that players will return to Night City, while also exploring a second, unnamed location—potentially expanding the Cyberpunk world like never before.

The Witcher 3 Reaches Historic Sales Milestone

The financial report also brought another big headline for CD Projekt: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has now sold over 60 million copies worldwide since its release a decade ago. This achievement makes it one of the best-selling video games of all time, further solidifying CD Projekt’s legacy in the RPG genre.

This success story is particularly important as CD Projekt is simultaneously working on a new Witcher saga, codenamed Project Polaris, which will usher in the next era for Geralt’s universe.

What’s Next for CD Projekt Red?

With Cyberpunk 2 now in pre-production, Phantom Liberty a commercial success, and The Witcher 3 continuing to perform remarkably well, CD Projekt Red is in a strong position heading into the second half of the decade. The company is expected to ramp up hiring and development efforts in North America, as it invests in globalizing its creative capabilities.

The 2025 roadmap includes continued updates for Cyberpunk 2077, early development on the new Witcher trilogy, and the gradual reveal of Cyberpunk 2’s core gameplay and features—likely through teaser trailers and developer updates in the coming months.

Final Thoughts: Cyberpunk Universe Is Here to Stay

Despite its initial challenges, the Cyberpunk franchise has found its footing. With Cyberpunk 2 officially on track, CD Projekt Red is ready to expand this universe and explore new stories, cities, and characters. If the studio delivers on its promises, Cyberpunk 2 may not just be a sequel—it could be a defining sci-fi RPG of the next generation.
