During today’s Summer Game Fest 2025, Sega unveiled new details about its upcoming arcade-style racing title, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The latest installment in Sega’s long-running Sonic racing franchise is shaping up to be far more ambitious than previous entries — and fans now have an official release date to mark on their calendars.

Release Date Confirmed: September 25, 2025

Sega announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will officially launch on September 25, 2025 (or Mehr 3, 1404 for Persian calendar users). The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC at launch, promising a multi-platform experience with vibrant visuals and high-speed gameplay.

A Crossover Like Never Before: Guest Characters Revealed

In one of the showcase’s most surprising moments, Sega confirmed that CrossWorlds won’t be limited to just the Sonic universe. The game will feature guest racers from other iconic franchises, broadening the appeal of the title and turning it into a full-blown Sega crossover kart racer.

The first three confirmed guest characters are:

    • 🃏 Joker – the stylish Phantom Thief from Persona 5

    • ⛏️ Steve – the iconic blocky adventurer from Minecraft

    • 💼 Ichiban Kasuga – the bold and lovable protagonist of the Like a Dragon series

Each character will bring their own unique kart design, special animations, and custom voice lines, giving fans more than just a visual cameo.

     Cross-Franchise Ambitions: Sega’s New Strategy?

With CrossWorlds, Sega appears to be moving beyond a simple Sonic & Friends kart racer. The inclusion of characters from both first-party properties (Persona, Like a Dragon) and third-party hits (Minecraft, owned by Microsoft) suggests Sega is embracing a broader collaborative model.

    This opens the door for:

    • New themed tracks based on each character’s home world

    • Special abilities or items tied to each franchise

    • Ongoing seasonal content with guest appearances from other games

If successful, CrossWorlds could become Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s Mario Kart, not just in terms of gameplay but in cross-franchise appeal.

More Crossover Characters on the Horizon?

While only three guest racers have been revealed so far, Sega hinted that more crossovers are planned, possibly to be unveiled closer to release or as post-launch DLC. Some speculation among fans points to potential appearances by:

    • Characters from Yakuza, Bayonetta, Shin Megami Tensei, or even classic Sega IPs like Jet Set Radio or Crazy Taxi

    • Collaborations with third-party publishers for timed events or promotional content

This could turn Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds into one of the most content-rich arcade racers of its generation.

Visual Style, Game Modes, and Customization (More Details Coming Soon)

While gameplay footage was limited, Sega promised more reveals in the coming months, including:

    • Detailed breakdowns of racing mechanics

    • The full character and vehicle customization system

    • Local and online multiplayer features

    • Ranked challenges, time trials, and team battle modes

Early visuals showcased a bright, stylized art direction in line with recent Sonic titles, while karts appeared to have dynamic transformation abilities similar to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Final Thoughts: Can Sega Deliver the Ultimate Crossover Racer?

With Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Sega is clearly aiming high — not only to revitalize Sonic’s racing series but to compete with the crossover success of games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Smash Bros., and Multiversus.

By combining nostalgia, guest characters, and vibrant gameplay, CrossWorlds is shaping up to be one of the most exciting arcade racers in years. Whether you’re a die-hard Sonic fan or a Persona 5 speed freak, this might be the racing event of 2025.
