One of the main reasons video games are so beloved is because they let us live through countless scenarios — from leading armies in medieval crusades to fighting on the front lines of war. Games give us the power to walk in the shoes of characters we’ve only dreamed of. Among all genres, role-playing games (RPGs) have a special place in many players’ hearts, and with mobile gaming on the rise, this genre has made a strong transition to smaller screens.

If you’re one of those RPG fans, then Shadow of the Depth might be your next favorite title. Let’s take a closer look at what this dark and immersive action RPG has to offer.

From the Creators of Soul Knight and Otherworld Legends

The game comes from ChillyRoom, a popular indie studio best known for hit mobile games like Soul Knight and Otherworld Legends. With a strong track record in mobile development, expectations are naturally high whenever this studio releases something new.

In December 2023, they launched Shadow of the Depth, a mobile-first game that somehow slipped under the radar despite having great potential. It’s one of their most polished works, yet it hasn’t received the recognition it deserves — and that’s exactly why it’s worth discovering.

An Indie Gem Powered by Unity

Built with the Unity engine, Shadow of the Depth blends action, storytelling, and strategy into a tight, beautifully crafted mobile RPG. While the game was originally designed for mobile and is available for free, it was also ported to PC, where it’s available on Steam for $10.49. Despite the platform difference, both versions maintain the same high-quality experience.

A Dark Fantasy Tale of Revenge

Like many of ChillyRoom’s previous games, Shadow of the Depth stands out thanks to its strong storytelling. The game is set in a surreal, fantasy world under siege by monsters. You play as an unnamed warrior — the only son of a blacksmith — who loses his entire family in a brutal monster attack. His home is destroyed, and now, with nothing left to lose, he rises for revenge.

The narrative is powerful but subtle. It doesn’t overwhelm the gameplay, but it gives enough emotion and motivation to make the adventure feel meaningful.

    More Heroes Join the Fight

The game starts with a single playable character, but as you progress, more heroes are unlocked: a skilled swordsman, a precise hunter, and a wise sorcerer. Each one has their own backstory and personal reasons for fighting the monsters — and more importantly, they each offer different gameplay styles.

This adds depth and replayability, encouraging players to experiment with different team compositions and abilities.

A Mix of Action, Tactics, and Choices

Gameplay-wise, Shadow of the Depth features an isometric camera angle and classic fantasy visuals that will remind retro fans of older dungeon-crawlers. But what makes the game really stand out is how much player choice matters.

Your decisions affect not only the flow of the game but also the ending. While your main goal is to defeat monsters and survive the darkness, how you get there — and who survives the journey — depends entirely on you.

    It’s Also a Roguelike!

That’s not all. Shadow of the Depth incorporates roguelike elements, which means each run can feel unique. Enemies are tough but fair, and thanks to solid AI behavior, every battle feels satisfying. The combat is challenging but rewarding, especially once you get the hang of each character’s strengths and weaknesses.

    Loot, Weapons, and Level Design

Every battle rewards you with loot, which is key to upgrading your weapons and equipment. These upgrades are essential, especially as you progress into more dangerous levels.

The level design itself is excellent. Stages are laid out in a way that tests your reaction, awareness, and strategy. And best of all? The game is completely offline. No connection required — just you, your heroes, and the darkness ahead.

Stylish Visuals and a Stunning Soundtrack

Fantasy games are often known for their visuals, and Shadow of the Depth doesn’t disappoint. The art style is charming, detailed, and rich with atmosphere. But the real highlight is the soundtrack — it’s haunting, emotional, and beautifully crafted. From quiet, eerie melodies to intense combat music, it sets the tone perfectly.

Combined with the visual design, the audio elements help create an immersive world that sticks with you long after you’ve put your phone down.

Should You Play Shadow of the Depth?

Absolutely — especially if you love action RPGs with deep storytelling, strong characters, and responsive controls. Whether you’re in it for the combat, the emotional revenge story, or the classic retro feel, this game delivers on all fronts.

The only mystery is why it hasn’t received more attention. Maybe it was overshadowed by ChillyRoom’s more famous titles — but Shadow of the Depth stands firmly on its own as one of the most underrated mobile RPGs of 2023.

Final Verdict: A Hidden Mobile Masterpiece

Shadow of the Depth is a must-play for anyone who enjoys deep, challenging, and emotional action games. Whether you’re playing on mobile or PC, the game offers a full experience with no pay-to-win nonsense and lots of heart.
